After listing my pipe collection on , it’s time to part with the favorites - my Ashtons by Bill Taylor, my Ferndowns by Les Wood, and a few other high end pieces. Any of these that don’t sell, I will gladly keep.

ASHTON LX EARLY 1990 OLDCHURCH CANADIAN WITH ORIGINAL ASHTONITE STEM - STUNNING PIPE. 360° RELIEF GRAIN

This is one of those gems where I simply love every detail of a great pipe.

The Ashton brand was created by William Ashton Taylor, a former Dunhill carver who went on to make high-end pipes under his own name. Ashton was part of a new wave of top quality British pipes in the early 80’s.

This Ashton doesn’t have a date code on it. Thankfully, I can spot a Bill Taylor pipe a mile away since Jimmy Craig era Ashtons bear a 3 digit code. Why no date code? We’ll….

Two possibilities, both good.

1) It could be a first year Ashton. Most first year Ashtons (1983) had no date code, making this an early Ashton.

2). Alternatively in the early 1990s, many Ashtons were not given a date code, so if a pipe stayed on the shelf, it wouldn’t be an ‘old pipe.’ It also has been documented that Bill lost the letter dies for part of 1990 or so.

Ashton collectors consider the older pipes to be the most valuable. So, in either case, this is an early Ashton. AND A NICE ONE.

Whether you are a seasoned smoker or a beginner, this pipe is sure to impress. I think I may have only smoked it a few dozen times.

On top of that it's a "OLDCHURCH", one of Ashton's more stunning finishes. Again this pipe is a head-turner and not to be missed!
