Interestingly, I believe the original spelling of those words in English was without the "u". They were introduced when some people felt that English should be more like French. There's no accounting for taste! Thus the words were taken across the Atlantic in their original form.

I'm not suggesting that either is more correct than the other; obviously each is correct in its own context.
