Discounting photons, which you may argue, must have mass; mass is necessary for us to observe the effects of energy. How would we know if energy were present in an “absolute vacuum” with nothing for it to act upon, and nothing with which it might be observed?

If we cannot say with certainty that it is there, nor can we say that it isn't.
