In the middle ages in Europe people figured out how to put mouldy bread on open wounds to prevent infection. They didn't know about bacteria. They didn't know about penicillin mold. But they weren't so ignorant they couldn't use what they were taught.

Are you really going to claim that humans in the first century were too stupid to let bread get mouldy and put it on open wounds?
