A study of the genome of the Herpes Simplex Virus (HPV) has been used to trace the migration of humans out of Africa and around the world. The study is reported in Phys.Org.

HPV is usually a mild virus that causes cold sores around the mouth, but can cause severe illness in a few cases. The authors studied the genome of virus samples collected around the world and found that they could trace the mutations in enough detail to generally confirm the Out Of Africa theory of human origins. Information obtained from the virus genome closely parallels the information found in human genomic studies.
