We have a Community Outreach program where I work. I am a co-coordinator for the program. We do a number of things that are pretty cool - supply tutors to different schools, give guest lectures, provide science fair judges, had a math day at our work and hosted a middle school algebra class, hire a teacher intern to do work in their own field, have a science related essay contest - but the biggest thing we do is host a science night. This is our third year doing it. Our staff members put on exhibits and we get exhibits from other non-profit groups to come to our place of business and let kids see some practical science. Usually there's something the kids can put their hands on.
I think every major metropolitan area should have events like this. We work with the school system, but we put the whole thing together. For the last 2 years we've had over 250 kids come, plus parents, teachers, administrators, and siblings.
Anyway, for those of you who are interested in promoting science and math education, this is an idea for you to think about.
