AOL was one of the early pioneers of the Internet in the mid-1990s, and the most recognized brand on the web in the United States. It originallyprovided a dial-up serviceto millions of Americans, as well as providing aweb portal,e-mail,instant messagingand later aweb browserfollowing its purchase ofNetscape. AOL rapidly shrank thereafter, partly due to the decline of dial-up and rise ofbroadband.[2]AOL was eventuallyspun offfrom Time Warner in 2009, bought by Verizon, and spun off again.

At one point, AOL had over 35 million dial-up subscribers and was worth over $100B. It was part of the largest corporate merger that turned into the biggest bust in corporate merger history when the Internet bubble burst and AOL eventually got sold off and bought up again and now barely exists in the backrooms of a holding company.
