Early Santa traditions are seen mixed in this 19th Century composite Christmas visitor:
Prior to the "modern" Coca Cola Santa Claus, many nations had unusual traditions and images of Santa;
early American images often combined or picked whatever the artist wanted to use from
various different national and ethnic traditions. For example, in some European fairy folk and magic elf traditions, St. Nicholas and Krampus would go house to house to reward or punish children with “Ruten” - small birch twigs. 1800's Santas are found dressed in different colors of suits, as tiny elves, as Father Christmas giants, etc.
