RARE U. S. S. Tullibee Nuclear Sub Sterling Disk Bracelet Charm:
$25.99

What an interesting and rare item this is! It is a sterling silver disk engraved with a nuclear power symbol and radiation of waves from that symbol, and on the reverse the inscription \"U. S. S. Tullibee\". I had no clue what the U. S. S. Tullibee was/is so I looked it up on Wikipedia and it was a nuclear sub, named for a bird called the tullibee. Alas it is no longer, having been sunk by one of its own torpedoes in 1944. This must have been given to the girlfriend or wife of one of the crew. The charm needs a good polishing but otherwise is in great condition. Of course there are predictable scratches and scuffs from its age. It is a very nice relic of our early war years and early use of nuclear power in wartime. Here\'s the history of the U. S. S. Tullibee direct from Wikipedia:

USSTullibee(SS-284), aGato-class submarine, was the first ship of theUnited States Navyto be named for thetullibee. Her keel waslaid downon 1 April 1942 atMare Island, California, by theMare Island Navy Yard. She waslaunchedon 11 November 1942 sponsored by Mrs.Kenneth C. Hurd; andcommissionedon 15 February 1943,CommanderCharles F. Brindupkein command.

Tullibeeheld shakedown training from 8–30 April 1943 and departed forHawaiion 8 May. She arrived atPearl Harboron 15 May and held further training exercises in Hawaiian waters. Numerous air fitting leaks developed, and she was docked for repairs twice. When this proved ineffective, the submarine entered the navy yard until 11 July.

Tullibeestarted her first war patrol on 19 July 1943. She was sunk by one of her own torpedoes on 26 March 1944 while on her fourth patrol. One crew member survived the sinking ofTullibee.
