The Poverty Point Native American culture flourished in Louisiana and Mississippi before disappearing several hundred years ago.
Pottery from this culture is relatively rare. Early pottery was made from steatite (soapstone) before adoption of clay pottery that were not tempered.
This pottery was acquired during a salvage dig at the Claiborne site in Hancock County, MS in 1969. An industrial complex is now located at this site.
