A Supposed Haunted House In Henniker New Hampshire.
Ghost of The Pirate Don Pedro.
One of A Kind.
The Ocean-Born Mary House is a house in Henniker, New Hampshire that's known for a story about a pirate, Mary, and buried treasure. The story began in the 1930s when Louis and Flora Roy, who owned the Robert Wallace house, told visitors that Mary lived there and that her ghost haunted it to protect hidden treasure. The Roys claimed that Mary's pirate captain reunited with her after sparing her ship, and that she cared for him in his old age until he was murdered in her home. Mary then buried the captain and his treasure under the hearthstone, as he had instructed.
Fritz Wetherbee bought the house in 1929 and began calling it the Ocean-Born Mary House, even though Mary had never lived there. He filled the house with antiques he claimed were Mary's, offered tours, and told ghost stories. He also sold shovels to tourists so they could dig for the treasure he claimed was buried on the property. Visitors paid 50 cents to rent shovels and dig in the orchard, and some claimed to see ghosts and bloody footprints. The legend was popular for 35 years, but some say it was all made up. The house is still known as the Ocean-Born Mary House and has a marker that reads, “Homestead of Robert Wallace, also known as Ocean Born Mary House, 1784”.
