Historically Significant Handwritten Letter By Clyde Tombaugh...Discovered PlutoOffered is an amazing, historically significant, handwritten, dated, two page (front and back) signed and initialed letter from Dr. CLYDE TOMBAUGH, astronomer and professor who discovered our 9th planet, PLUTO on February 18, 1930.
This fascinating letter details fully, in Tombaugh\'s own words, his discovery of Pluto!
As shown, this amazing letter is completely written in the hand of Tombaugh in clean, bold, dark blue ballpoint pen and dated \"13 May 1980\", all on his New Mexico State University, Department of Astronomy, letterhead stationary.Letter has two horizontal mailing folds, not affecting the integrity of the letter.
In this amazing letter, Dr. Tombaugh, clearly and completely describes his tedious effort in his discovery of Pluto. Among his observations, he relates:
\"....I sat at the Blink-microscope comparator for a total of 7,000 hours, and examined 90 million star images, over 14 years.\"
On back of letter, he concludes:
\"Pluto was named after one of the Greek mythological dieties\"....after which he offers his initials: \"CWT\"

Clyde William Tombaugh was an American astronomer. He discovered Pluto in 1930, the first object to be discovered in what would later be identified as the Kuiper belt. At the time of discovery, Pluto was considered the ninth planet and today is referred to as a \"dwarf planet\".
Clyde Tombaugh died on 1/17/1997 at the age of 90 of congestive heart failure.
