This well-preserved Victorithyris garbaldiana fossil, first described by Davidson in 1862, originates from the Middle Miocene, approximately 14 million years ago. The largest shell measures 2.5 x 2.0 x 1.2 cm, and it was collected from the Murray River Cliffs near Waikerie in the Riverlands region of South Australia. These cliffs are renowned for their rich fossil deposits, and this particular specimen was discovered within the Glenforslan Formation, part of the Morgan Group, which provides insight into the marine ecosystems of this ancient period.

Victorithyris garbaldiana is a species of brachiopod, commonly known as lamp shells due to their unique shape. Brachiopods were once abundant in the world\'s oceans, and their fossil record provides crucial information about marine life and environments from millions of years ago. This specimen\'s symmetrical, robust shell reflects the characteristics typical of the species and is beautifully preserved, offering a window into the ancient seas that once covered this part of Australia.

The Morgan Group and specifically the Glenforslan Formation, where this fossil was collected, are well-known for their marine fossils, dating back to when much of southeastern Australia was submerged beneath shallow seas. The fossils from this region allow scientists to study the biodiversity and environmental conditions of the Miocene epoch. This Victorithyris garbaldiana fossil, in particular, adds to the understanding of the brachiopod species that once thrived in these ancient waters. Its size, condition, and the significance of the formation from which it was unearthed make it a valuable piece of natural history, connecting us to the rich marine past of Australia
