This listing is for an Oil Painting Portrait Franco Prussian uniform? French / Prussian Officer By G. RUFFINI Antique original artwork on board. The gentleman in the painting is not named, however the work is signed by “G. Ruffini”. It is also dated 1906. I purchased this work from a friend, who acquired from a rather opulent estate. Originally, he told me it came in a magnificent hand carved frame that was so elaborate & ornate it was almost an artwork itself. Unfortunately, he sold the frame separately before I was there, which I’m sure makes your hearts as heavy as mine! Nonetheless, the workmanship and quality of this painting is superb, the plus is now you get to upgrade its frame however you wish- guilt free. The brush technique and color palette truly speak to the work of someone trained in the ways of the old masters. I believe it to be either a French or Prussian officer in possibly their Franco-Prussian War uniform, or their regular one. It is a quite ornate uniform, with nice decoration, but I have not been able to pin it down to a specific country branch or rank yet. Could be an officer of normal bearing, or some more famous higher up officer or royal- which is more likely in my opinion based on the sheer quality of this painting. The previous owner strongly believed it was a portrait of “ Heinrich Von Pirteich (1841-1920)”. A general and minister of war to Austro-Hungary, and is the one who forced a modernization of artillery & weapons. Portraits back then usually cost between a weeks and a months wages, this feels like it cost more around a years wages for a regular man. The classic design is excellent for many rooms and a large variety of decor styles. It makes this an excellent staple piece for your collection, one your friends definitely won’t have! It is in good condition, with no major damage. There are some small spots of missing paint, however since the largest of these are outside the “cameo” or “oval” the main body of work is in, just background colors, they are not too serious & likely will be covered by the new matting. The wood board it is painted on is in excellent condition, with perfect patina, and has no damage. It has no cracks chips or signs of splitting in the future. No major crackling in the paint nor signs of future flaking. Brush strokes are quick and masterful, visible up close.
