Airport Surveillance Radar(ASR-3) Console Map Overlay

The Overlay Map was used with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) search radar at Friendship International Airport at Baltimore, MD which is now Baltimore Washington

International Airport. The radar system was installed at the airport in 1951, two years after the airport was opened in 1949. The ASR-3 was built by The Bendix Corporation located in Towson, MD. This was the first ASR-3 System to be installed in the country. The system was comprised of a Remote Transmitter/Receiver site (Transmitter/Receiver Channel Serial # 1 & 2), an Antenna system, Terminal processing and Display Systems. The Radar is used by the Air Traffic Controllers to monitor and direct air traffic in the airport control area. The ASR-3 radar system is the first radar I worked on when I went to work at the airport as an FAA Electronics Technician in January 1959 until I transfered to Dulles in August 1961.

The Map Overlay was installed on the Controller Radar Display as a back-up

and cross reference to the system generated video map. The Overlay Map displayed airport runways, air navigational aids, obstructions and airways. The ASR-3 was a 30 nautical mile(NMI) radar depicting a plan position view of a circular area 30 MI's from the radar antenna site which is the reference center of the display.
