The letter is from Adam Hintzer to his friend Frank Hoffmeier and reads as follows:

Liberty, Montgomery Co., Ohio July 11th, 1863

My Dear Friend,

When your favor reached me I was busy preparatory to attending a teachers examination which was held on the 27th day of June. I succeeded in getting a certificate good for one year, but it did not get me a situation yet to teach next fall.

I am afraid this will not reach you soon, for I expect you are out with the rest of \'em. After Lee and his crew. I guess old Lee begins to think he has walked up the wrong passenger by stirring up the old Keystone. The unconditional surrender of Visksburg to U.S. Grant is quite encouraging at this time too. General Grant and his army must have had a grand Fourth of July celebration. I suppose some of the Southern chivalry begin to wish that they had not repealed the Fourth as a national holiday.

We have had a grand celebration at Dayton on the Fourth of July. It took me about four days to celebrate it this year. I went to Dayton on the third, and when dispatches came over the telegraph in the afternoon bringing some good news from our armies, men walked about town saying the Fourth has commenced. Nearly, if not quite all of the churches, most of the business houses, and many dwelling houses were decorated with flags; some were large ones, and thousands of smaller ones; but on the court house and the city hall there were none on the morning of the Fourth. Reason: because all the city and county officers were COPPERHEADS.

Rev. Col. Granville Moody - the fighting Parson - an old Methodist preacher, but for the last two years Colonel of the 54th O.V. made a speech in the forenoon, in front of the Council House. He first looked to the top for the Flag and asked why it wasn\'t up there, he was told the reason why. He then asked where the mayor was; a little boy said he was to a Butternut picnic. Then the old Col. said \"Well the flag must go up there anyhow\". No sooner had he said this then a Committee, lead on by Major Keith(Our Provost Marshal) proceeded to put it up. Soon the Stars and Stripes floated from the top of the roof, greeted by the cheers of thousands. But the old Col. wasn\'t satisfied yet. He looked around and said \"The national Flag must go up over the City Hall too\". He was told that they had a nice flag belonging to the Hall. \"Well then go and put it up\" said he, \"peaceably if you can, if you can\'t put it up peaceably, I will put it up decently\". The Committee went to the hall, but Lo! The COPPERHEADS had stolen the flag. But the committee soon got another one, and soon they ran it up amid the cheers of the multitude.

About this time the news came that Lee was defeated sure. Such cheering as was done then I believe I never heard before. The band had taken their position on the roof of the Court House. They struck up \"Hail Columbia\", this was the first time I heard that tune played by any band since the rebellion commenced. In the afternoon, Hon. John Brough, our candidate for Governor, and Col. Charles Anderson, the one for Lieut. Gov., as well as several other gentlemen, made eloquent and patriotic speeches on the Fair Ground. They had the honor of addressing the patriotic people by the acre, as Col. Moody said in the morning.

In the evening we had the grandest display of fireworks that I ever saw; it lasted about two hours. The exercises were enlivened during the day and evening by the Glee Club (which is principally composed of pretty young ladies) which sung many patriotic odes appropriate to the occasion. It is nice to have celebrations at home, conducted peaceably and harmoniously, if it does require a heavy military guard to make them so; yet how much does it detract to think of hardships, sufferings and privations of our gallant, patriotic soldiers, who have placed their all upon the alter of their country, for our good as well as for their own and that of their posterity.

If you and your assistant still go a-visiting separately I expect you will not go that way long any more. Yours is always the language of friendship, but I never detected in you the language of love (for women of course) as I do in your last when speaking of your assistant. Go on, I offer you God Speed. Be assured that both men and women who appreciatetheir responsibility enjoy life much better in the married state than they do when they are single.

Please write soon. Your sincere friend

ADAM HINTZER
