Roald Amundsen wished tofly to the North Pole and complete a transpolar flight.

Lincoln Ellsworth, an American polar explorer and millionaire, financed the 1925 expedition and accompanied Amundsen.

About the Maud:\"The \"Maud,\" Captain Amundsen\'s ship, is a 300 ton schooner, 200 feet long, built with round keel especially to escape the crushing grip of the Arctic ice in which it became locked soon after it entered the Arctic Sea. Polar Drift Expedition\"

Great photo of Roald Amundsen\'s ship, Maud, during his 1918Polar Drift Expedition, which lasted until 1925.

From wiki: Maud was carefully navigated through the ice west to east through the Northeast Passage. The voyage was to the northeasterly direction over the Kara Sea. Amundsen planned to freeze the Maud into the polar ice cap and drift towards the North Pole – as Nansen had done with the Fram – and he did so off Cape Chelyuskin. But, the ice became so thick that the ship was unable to break free, although it was designed for such a journey in heavy ice. In September 1919, the crew got the ship loose from the ice, but it froze again after eleven days somewhere between the New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island.

There is much online about Roald Amundsen\'s polar exploration trips andattempts to get to the North Pole and complete a transpolar flight. Some great websites on this topic is frammuseum.no in Norway and history.net.
