DESCRIPTION & CONDITION:

An interesting album featuring images of the balloon, named ‘Bussard’, fully inflated, deflated, taking off with crew, packed for transport, and so on, as well as aerial views of the German countryside taken from the balloon. There was a military balloon called the Bussard, which took place in a scientific experiment on November 14, 1896, when a number of balloons across Europe ascended at more or less the same time to take weather observations. The problem with that identification is that the images here show a completely civilian crew, so a second possibility is that this balloon belonged to the Bussard Aviation Works at Johannisthal (Berlin), a company which made early airplanes and was closed down by the German military (“retiring from the industry and selling off the entire plant and furniture”) in April, 1914.
Photo album with limp embossed covers and string ties. 7.25”x5”, 24 cardstock leaves, 13 with 38 images, most measuring either 3”x4” or 3.25”x2.5”. Light soil and minor wear.
