H.M. Screw Steam-Ship London News
1853This is the cover sheet only, from the June 4, 1853, issue of The Illustrated London News. It is over 170 years old. The page measures 10.5 x 15.5 inches in size, and is in excellent and very attractive condition, with a light, dime-sized dampstain in its blank bottom left corner. The top half of this title page carries the paper\'s masthead and an article on “The Turkish Question,” during the build-up to the Crimean War. The bottom half is of more historical interest, presenting a fine woodcut engraving of Her Majesty\'s Steam-Ship Phoenix, as it set off an a northern exploration, attempting to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin\'s legendary lost Arctic expedition. On the reverse side of the page is a related article about the engraving. This text is 45 lines in small print, and begins:“The Government are losing no opportunity for continuing the search for Sir John Franklin and his gallant companions, in every quarter where there seems to be the slightest prospect of success. . . .” The expedition was headed by Captain Ingerfield, and the story goes on to give details on the anticipated routes his ship and crew would be exploring, saying in part: “On the arrival of the Phoenix at Beechy Island she will deposit the stores there which she takes out for the relieft of Sir E. Belcher\'s expedition . . . . carry on to as far as Repulse Bay . . . . Should Captain Ingerfield find no trace of Sir John Franklin in that direction, he will return through Cumberland Straits, and proceed up Smith\'s Sound, to follow out the traces of open water which he discovered there last year during his voyage in the Isabel . . . .” Etc.[p3289]_gsrx_vers_1706 (GS 9.9 (1706))
