FrancisGordon Albert StoneCBE,FRS,FRSC(19 May1925– 6 April 2011), always known as Gordon, was a Britishchemistwho was a prolific and decoratedscholar. He specialized in the synthesis ofmain He was theauthor of more than 900 academic publications resulting in anh-indexof 72. GordonStone was born in Exeter, Devon in 1925, the only child of Sidney CharlesStone, acivil servant, andFlorence Beatrice Stone (née Coles).He received his B.A. in 1948 andPh.D. in 1951, both fromChrist\'s College, Cambridge(Cambridge University), England, where hestudied underHarry Julius Emeléus. He married JudithHislop (1928-2008) of Sydney, Australia in 1956 with whom he had three sons. Aftergraduating fromChrist\'sCollege, Cambridge, he was aFulbrightScholarat theUniversity of Southern Californiafortwo years, before being appointed as an instructor in the Chemistry DepartmentatHarvard University, and was appointedassistantprofessorin 1957.Hewas theRobert A. Welch Distinguished Professor of ChemistryatBaylorUniversity,Texasuntil 2010, but his most productive period was asProfessor of Inorganic Chemistry atBristol University, England (1963–1990), wherehe published hundreds of papers over the course of 27 years. In research hecompeted with his contemporaryGeoffrey Wilkinson. Elected to theRoyal Society of Chemistryin 1970,and to theRoyal Societyin 1976, he was awardedtheDavy Medal\"Inrecognition of his many distinguished contributions to organometallicchemistry, including the discovery that species containing carbon-metal ofmetal-metal multiple bonds are versatile reagents for synthesis of clustercompounds with bonds between different transition elements\" in 1989. Amongthe many foci of his studies were complexes ligands. At Baylor, he maintained a research program onboronhydrides, a lifelong interest. In1988 he chaired the Review Committee commissioned by the British Government(the now-dissolvedUniversity Grants Committee)to carry out a review of chemistry in UK academia (\"UniversityChemistry— The Way Forward\", \"The Stone Report\"). His mainrecommendation, \"that the UGC fund properly not fewer than 30chemistry departments\" and that \"at least 20 of these departmentshave 30 or more academic staff to compete successfully at theinternational level\"wasnever implemented. HisautobiographyLeaving No Stone Unturned, Pathways in OrganometallicChemistry, was published in 1993.WithWilkinson, he edited the influential seriesComprehensive OrganometallicChemistry. WithRobert West, he edited the seriesAdvancesin Organometallic Chemistry. The Gordon Stone Lecture series at theUniversity of Bristol is named in his honour. AnnualStone Symposiums are also held at Baylor University in his honor.
