I think once you have 'produced' your magnet, its a magnet forever.
The magnetic domains are always present but randomly aligned within your iron.
All you do using another strong magnetic field is to align those original magnetic domains, to produce a united co-ersive mag field.
Heat or a magnetic distortion applied WITHIN the flux body of the magnet will destroy it and randomise the mag domains once again.
Since your rolling ball is only deflected by the external mag field of your magnet,and provided the ball is not close enough or big enough to start distorting the mag domains WITHIN your magnet, you may roll balls with impunity forever.
PS...an afterthought.
I think I am right in stating that-
The 'impunity forever', may not hold, were you to roll a different geometric shape other than a ball past your magnet.
The reason being - you cannot magnetise a ball
