You are correct that some herbal medicine works. And in almost every case that recognition turned it into serious research and, motivated by profits as you correctly point out, a western medicine derived thereof.
Almost nothing sold as a "folk" remedy has every been subjected to a double-blind clinical study. Which means that while it may do something ... more likely what it does is pure placebo. In some cases what we find later ... for example with ephedrine ... is that it does harm too.
