Breeder reactors are better than fusion reactors mostly because the former exists and the later does not. Fusion power has been 20 years away for more than 20 years. At this point too much money has been spent and too many careers involved for anyone to admit that it's a technological dead end. Fusion power is certainly physically possible, but there's a mountain of evidence that magnetic confinement Toakmaks is not a workable solution.
