I think you did quite well. But you must remember several things.
First: The average IQ is 100. What this means is not that most people have an IQ of 100 ... but rather that half of the people don't. You met some of them.
Second: Fanatics, true believers, the self-righteous don't necessarily know what they are talking about: But that doesn't stop them from authoritatively speaking it. They should just be quickly identified and ignored.
Third: No power known to our species is capable of making these people consider that there is something they don't know unless it comes from someone cloaking themselves in the same cloth and acting even more fanatical. Thus born-again nut cases listen to Jerry Falwell.
Fourth: They can be fun to play with if you keep your wits about you. Sort of like dangling string in front of a frisky cat.
