I can see it now: all these cosmetically altered asteroids zooming around the solar system, covered in reflective or absorptive substances, with carefully painted identification numbers and a few "Kilroy was here" graffitis. A new race of world heroes would come into being: The valiant asteroid painter, dedicated to saving Earth, one rock at a time! Such a noble breed!
