Another subtle ploy that is more than capable of diverting an asteroid's orbit is to land a small craft that just digs in the ground and throws what it digs over its shoulder into space.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction and over years that reaction will shift the orbit. Same basic principle as that which powers the ion engine that NASA recently tested with great success.
