Actually, I think the wording in the comic strip, if I remember right from reading it in the Sunday Houston Chronicle, was "We has met the enemy, and they is us," spoken as the friends peered out from behind the remaining tall marsh grass at the edge of the swamp and looked out upon the devastation being wrought by other creatures upon the face of the world. I remember especially because the ungrammatical language troubled me so much I asked someone else about it.
But I'm sure I could be wrong. It might be nice to find the original strip and compare.
