Fabricated data underpinned the now-retracted claims that the world's heaviest atom, element 118, had been discovered.

An investigation revealed that one scientist in a team of 15 researchers falsified the results, according to Charles Shank, director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.

But after scientists in Germany and Japan failed to replicate the results, the Berkeley lab team analysed their data again. This time, they found no signs of the decay of element 118 and they retracted their claims (New Scientist magazine, 4 August 2001).

Nice to see that science works the way it is supposed to work. Independent teams verifying discoveries ... taking nothing on faith.
