I wonder if this sort of "relevant features" approach can also account for perception of motion? When my German shorthair pointer dog chases rabbits for fun, it's stunning how the two creatures adjust for motion between them. Absolutely stunning.

It appears this study includes a measure for strength of activity too. If we add the conservative estimate that for humans each synaptic connection might have any one of ten different strengths, then the total number of distinct possible configurations of synaptic weights that the human brain might assume is roughly ten raised to the 100 trillionth power, or 10^100,000,000,000,000. That's some perception machine! The combinatorics are breathtaking!
