i think the reason we accepted it is because our teachers, peers, and the media have tautologically and relentlessly repeated it so many times

like so many other things (eg biological and cosmological evolution) that we are repeatedly blasted with, we just swallowed it...and we were so internally desensitized or calloused that we never even felt the hook :-)
