Right after the two scientists.. Pons and Fleishman.. reported their discovery, many other scientists attempted to reproduce their results. Nobody else was able to duplicate their results, and they failed to find any of the radiation that would have to be produced if there actually 'was' fusion going on. However, they did find that it was very easy to make a mistake in the experiment that would 'look' like energy was being produced.
As far as anyone can tell, Pos and Fleishman made a simple mistake in their experiment, and were so excited that they then prematurely announced the results before anyone else had verified them.
