Hi,it is important that the right people are involved in any Mars project, those that have the qualitys and thinking to enable mankind to
leapfrog out to the Planets and onwards. I believe
mankind has a million year+ future. Colonisation
will cut the odds of an unfortunate nuclear or bacteriological accident throwing us back a thousand years or so.
You are right to criticise,...splitting of water, insufficiency of solar panels for energy, methods of melting, etc, all help to locate the problem areas for the more optimistic among us to solve.
We are only primitives discussing possibilities, its nevertheless exciting and very interesting.
I appreciate your "dig" at me when I mentioned spade. Hi. But some kind of digging will have to be made...hopefully it will be done under a transparent Geodesic Dome. That should fill the inside with water vapour, condensate that will run down the inside every night to be collected.

Electrical power is certainly need, prehaps Solar panels wont supply enough. Compact Nuclear heat generators might well be used. Prehaps a tether?Or prehaps we will take a leaf out of a project the Israelis were working on a few years ago, when they inserted metal posts into the ground, developing amperage, even when separated by some miles.
Forward lateral optimistic thinking will preserve mankinds future.
