One line of thought. And one that I find pleasing in its potential for elegance. Is that there wasn't one bang ... but many.

If you look out into the universe what you observe is that the galaxies and galaxy clusters are not spread out uniformly. Rather they are like the skin of a balloon surrounding huge voids. In a sense ... they give the appearance of mapping out the surface of many smaller bangs.
