Actually, it has to do with the angle that the face of the rear window makes relative to the ground. I've driven a number of vehicles with windows close to the rear of the vehicle. The ones that have a sloping rear window in general stay fairly clean, I presume because of the air flow over the back of the vehicle. Those with nearly vertical rear windows get filthy rapidly. This is true even of a 3/4 ton pickup with a camper shell on top, with the windows at least 5 feet off the ground. And no, I wasn't off-roading.
I suspect the problem has to do with laminar air flow patterns.
