Big Bang

Why do scientists believe they can look back almost to the Big Bang. If two people set their clocks at zero at the Big Bang and continued away from one another, at least on some part of the journey, at less than that of light, then they would observe at least some time passing on the other's clock. And couldn't turn back time to ever see zero again on the other's clock. Why hasen't the light witnessing the beginning of the big bang already come and gone. How did we get so far ahead of it to be able to look back to the beginning.
