i am not certain but i think one of the ideas put forward for explaining 'deja vu' (hope i spelt that correctly) is that an immediate memory skips the short term memory and goes straight to long term memory, and then on to short term memory.
this then gives us the impression that an immediate happening was a long term memory first. then when the happening enters short term memory 'after' the long term memory (which had already been stored) we experience 'deja vu'
just an idea, and probably terribly explained, but i did try.
