Gasoline produces usable energy by combining oxygen with hydrogen and carbon and sulfur. We worry about the carbon dioxide causing global warming.
A hydrogen powered vehicle replaces the carbon and sulfur with more hydrogen. The exhaust has water vapor replacing carbon dioxide. Since water vapor is a more efficient greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, a hydrogen powered vehicle produces more greenhouse gas than a gasoline powered vehicle.
This article points out that the relationship is non-linear and when you reach a certain level of humidity in the air a runaway reaction can begin that ultimately results in the evaporation of all available water.
