I would argue that consciousness is not one thing. But rather a continuum.
A plant may not be conscious in the human sense. But it certainly knows its place within the ecosystem and interacts with other species. Reacting, for example with an afinity to water and sunlight.
Only our egos make us think we are all that different. Ask the people at Cancun if you don't believe me. (grin)
