Please forgive the intrusion, and please don't take offense, but I am not sure why an apparently polite request for some information (references) regarding one's qualifications or frame of reference should immediately be labeled an "ad hominem" attack. It seems a mild enough question to me. I think someone else might have phrased it more like, "So, (handing you a complimentary drink of your choice) where are you from and what do you do for a living?" It's not as if you'll have to kill us if you tell us, is it? :-)

Many of us have been here a long time and know each other pretty well. Heck, this is the longest-running cocktail party I've ever been to! It seems to work best when people make some effort to be pleasant, at least civil, and courteous. Try not to take umbrage where none may be intended; it's hard to learn anything from someone with whom you are at war.
