And the way to help others learn from this is to not sugar coat it. Publicize the fact that parents are responsible for their children in all cases. Make a big issue of it rather than hide it on the back page or come up with rationalizations of how cruel society is for not forgiving them of their ignorance. Public hangings of horse thieves didn’t stop the occasional theft but they sure did make it a rare event. It is a shame when people have to be punished so let's get the most benefit we can when we have to do it.
