The world was different in that as a result of the sin of Adam things came into being the world had not seen...thorns and thistles and such. You said that you(generically) cannot even breathe without killing something. Sure you can, if it wasn't there. There was no death, therefore there was no need for decomposing organisms. Just a thought.
