Re: If you don't wish to challenge your prejudices (Daniel Morgan)

Without even asking the obvious question as to why it was so hot 1000 years ago, let's put away our prejudices and consider a considerably more objective source of temperature measurement.

According to MSU data, here are the hottest JFM measurements in the last 24 years (since MSU became operational), in descending order:

1998
2002
1991
1988
1981
1983
1987
1980
1995
1999
1990
2001
1996
1992
1986
1997
1979
1982
1985
1994
2000
1984
1989
1993

The hottest first quarter was in 1998.

Q1 - 1994 = -0.139
Q1 - 1995 = +0.031
Q1 - 1996 = -0.048
Q1 - 1997 = -0.114
Q1 - 1998 = +0.529
Q1 - 1999 = +0.029
Q1 - 2000 = -0.149
Q1 - 2001 = -0.028
Q1 - 2002 = +0.221

Right now, i'm busy trying to correlate just a subset of these departures with the stock market. I know there's a link - i just can't seem to find it. Maybe i should opt for the surface measurements instead.

yea.

that's the ticket.
