Actually, one nice thing about hydrogen is that it is so much lighter than air that, when it blows up, it blows UP. If I remember correctly from something I read long ago, the designs for hydrogen vehicles ideally have the tank on the roof. It turns out that there is little damage to those things situated beneath the exploding tank.
