Why do we care?

Sure, once we're capable of space flight efficiently and regularly and have ships exploring the galaxy, yeah, let's swing by Mercury and check out the ice. Until then, why don't we spend our money on GETTING to that point, rather than on sending probes to look for ice cubes in an oven?

"Relatively low cost"... This is out of the mouths of people who think 20 million dollars isn't much.
