I'd wish you'd think again whether apples have a tangential movement. When a apple is falling we are moving with the earth mostly sideways, it is not at issue how were moving, but the apple is moving too. Therefore the apple must keep that movement to land at our feet. A site I looked at said all objects fall in a curve toward the earth. The important of this is that a curved path to the earth would be accelleration towards the earth which is observed but gravity would then be seen as a simple even pulling force, the tangential movement of the apple being redirected towards earth, like I think happens with the moon.
