But what is troubling is that implicitly, or perhaps explicitly, you are saying that nuclear power would not be cost effective if reactors were properly constructed and the staff competently trained and managed.

If we're looking at a near 100% safety margin, indeed they cannot compete with oil or coal. If they only required the safety margins common to oil and coal, the cost would be far less - or so logic would dictate. Additionally, even given the current safety margins, the newer designs are inherently cheaper to construct and - and and and, cheaper/easier/safer to maintain.

But I disagree with you about cost. The nuclear industry is so heavily subsidized by tax dollars it should be made into a non-profit charity.

The necessity for the government subsidy stems directly from the restrictions placed on nuclear power by the government, IMO.
