Elephants eat a lot of vegies. Roots of palms and bamboo are nutritionally dense. The pachyderms' trunks are not strong enough to roll trees out of the ground. The tusks are.

Please note that both sexes (not genders, gender is linguistics) of elephants have tusks; they're not primarily for harem challenges.

You can see elephants occassonally, particularly the African, using tusks defensively, but that's rare. They're for feeding. Deny it if you will.
