I don't find anything particularly difficult to accept about the two slit experiment because, as Dale says, it is a physical reality.
But I do think that a complete understanding of what happens when you try to determine the path through the apparatus awaits mathematics not yet invented involving more than our standard 3 spatial dimensions.
My personal suspicion is that while part of a photon travels through the apparatus ... part of it does not. Something that ties in neatly with other unsolved issues in physics. But this is purely a personal suspicion ... nothing more.
