It's the perseption that counts. It does't matter if it's more dangerous out there. (just joking). But the backyard syndrome really exists, the first colony we set up is going to relieve a lot of pressure of a doomsday senario simply because of the feeling of expansion and change. It's mostly when people feel stagnant that these fears develop. You can go first though, sounds awful out there.
