Can't help thinking alcoholism and smoking (or excessive smoking) are symptoms of an inability to cope and all that that might entail. The addiction element could even be an essential part of a proper escape from a reality too unpleasant to live with. But treating symptoms is a useful starting place when the underline causes are not known. But might also explains why different treatments work, there are always many treatments an illusive illness. Now I'm off down to Cheers.
